What to Wear for Your Photo Session

Not sure what to wear for your photo session? Don't stress! I've put together a few colour palettes and outfit ideas to help make planning a little easier.

Whether you're booking a family, maternity or newborn session, the most important thing is choosing outfits you feel comfortable and confident in. These are just suggestions to get you started, so there's no need to go shopping for a whole new wardrobe!

And if you're struggling to put everyone's outfits together, feel free to send me a few photos of what you're thinking. I'm always happy to help!

Warm Neutrals

Cream • Beige • Caramel • Chocolate

You really can't go wrong with warm neutrals! These soft, earthy colours work beautifully together and are perfect for both studio and outdoor family photos.

Think flowing dresses, linen shirts, relaxed trousers, soft knits and natural textures. Mixing lighter creams with deeper browns adds a little contrast without everyone looking too matchy-matchy.

I've included two outfit ideas, one with Mum in a dress and another with Mum in pants, because comfort is just as important as looking good!

Styling tip: Start with one outfit you love and build everyone else's colours around it. You don't need to buy a whole new wardrobe!

Sage & Cream

Cream • Sage • Olive • Taupe

Soft, natural and timeless! Sage green is such a beautiful colour for family photos, especially when paired with warm creams, beige and earthy tones.

Think flowing dresses, linen shirts, relaxed trousers and soft knits. Mixing different shades of green with lighter neutrals creates a lovely coordinated look without everyone wearing the same colour.

I've included two outfit ideas, one with Mum in a dress and another with Mum in pants, because you can still look beautifully coordinated while wearing whatever feels most comfortable!

Styling tip: Try mixing different textures like linen, cotton and soft knits to add a little interest while keeping the overall look simple and natural.

Dusty Blue & Oatmeal

Cream • Oatmeal • Powder Blue • Dusty Blue • Slate

Soft blues paired with warm neutrals create such a fresh, timeless look! This colour combination is beautiful for both studio and outdoor family photos, adding a little colour without being too bold.

Think floral dresses, light blue shirts, soft knits, linen trousers and natural fabrics. Mixing different shades of blue with creams and beige keeps everything looking coordinated without being too matchy-matchy.

I've included two outfit ideas, one with Mum in a dress and another with Mum in pants, so there's something for everyone!

Styling tip: Try spreading the blue tones across different family members rather than having everyone wear blue. Mixing in cream and oatmeal helps balance the colours beautifully.

Terracotta & Olive

Cream • Sand • Terracotta • Olive • Chocolate

Warm, earthy and full of beautiful natural colour! Terracotta and olive green work so well together, especially for outdoor family photos with warm, golden light.

Think flowing rust-coloured dresses, cream linen shirts, relaxed trousers and soft olive greens. Pairing these richer colours with lighter neutrals keeps everything balanced without feeling too dark or overwhelming.

I've included two outfit ideas, one with Mum in a dress and another with Mum in pants, showing how easily you can mix these colours while keeping everyone coordinated.

Styling tip: Let terracotta be your statement colour and use cream, beige and olive to tie everyone's outfits together. A little colour goes a long way!

Blush & Mocha

Cream • Blush • Dusty Rose • Mauve • Mocha

Soft, warm and a little romantic! Blush and mocha are such a beautiful combination for family photos, adding gentle colour while keeping everything natural and timeless.

Think flowing dresses, soft blouses, linen shirts, relaxed trousers and cosy knits. Mixing dusty pinks with warm creams and deeper browns creates a lovely balance without everyone looking too matchy-matchy.

I've included two outfit ideas, one with Mum in a dress and another with Mum in pants, showing how easily these colours can work for different styles and preferences.

Styling tip: Keep the pink tones soft and muted, and balance them with cream, beige or mocha. Not everyone needs to wear pink for the whole family to look beautifully coordinated!

Sage & Dusty Blue

Cream • Sand • Sage • Dusty Blue • Olive

Fresh, soft and beautifully natural! Sage green and dusty blue work so well together, especially when paired with warm creams and beige tones. This combination is perfect for both studio and outdoor family photos.

Think soft floral dresses, linen shirts, relaxed trousers and lightweight knits. Mixing the muted greens and blues with lighter neutrals creates a lovely coordinated look without everyone wearing the same colour.

I've included two outfit ideas, one with Mum in a dress and another with Mum in pants, showing how you can mix these colours to suit your family's style.

Styling tip: Try choosing either sage or dusty blue as your main colour, then use the other as a subtle accent. Keep the remaining outfits in cream, beige or soft neutrals to tie everything together.
